RFB-219-14 Keith and Velda Fairchild Group

AML Reclamation Project
Estimate:
$138,244.00

The Keith and Veda Fairchild site is located on Jim Arms Branch Road, just off of Hwy. 2039 near Collista. To reach the site from Paintsville, follow U.S. Hwy 23 south to a right onto Hwy. 825 and continue for approximately 0.7 mile to a right onto Hwy. 2039. Continue for approximately 0.3 mile to Jim Arms Branch Road on the left. The residence is at 57 Jim Arms Branch. The problem at this site consists of mine drainage from portals on a bench above the residence which have been previously closed with pipe. This drainage saturates the yard area and saturates the base of the residence. Reclamation will consist of constructing a flat bottom class II ditch to direct flow northeastward into the existing roadside drain along Jim Arms Branch. Hoe ram may be required if rock is encountered. Another ditch will be excavated into rock lower on the slope, and will also be daylighted into the existing drain. Subdrain is planned to be placed close to the residence and behind existing dog kennels to collect additional seepage and direct it southward into the roadside ditch on the south side of the property. Aggregate is to be removed from the inlet of an existing 15” corregated pipe under Jim Arms Branch, and a concrete headwall is to be placed. Otherwise, the pipe is not planned to be disturbed. It is intended that waste will be placed within the access and/or staging area for the Kenneth Wells (Darryl Kilgore Group) in far southern Johnson County, south of Van Lear. The Debra Cox site is located at the end of Shady Lane, just off of U.S. 23 near Wittensville. To reach the site from the intersection of U.S. 23 and KY 321 near Paintsville, continue north on U.S. 23 and continue for approximately 1.3 miles to Shady Lane of the left. It is about 0.8 mile to the residence. The problem at this site consists of a roughly circular subsidence, approximately 10 feet in diameter and 10 feet deep, that has occurred under the garage. This subsidence has filled with water and presents a danger to people and animals. Structure removal/replacement is included for the garage

RFB-212-14 Kimbler-Castle Drainage

AMD Abatement Project
Estimate:
$100,519.50

The Kimbler site consist of excavating into a seeping mine portal and backfilling with high purity limestone. We do not anticipate opening the old mine works. The water will be directed into an excavated channel lined with high purity limestone following the current flow path. We will construct an aerobic wetland (approx. 60’Lx30’Wx3’H) in an existing low lying area prior to releasing the water through a highway culvert. The area surrounding the proposed wetland will serve as our project waste area.
The adjacent Castle site involves excavating a trench back to seeping mine works to collect the water and channel it to an existing 120’ long, 24” diameter drain pipe. We will clean out the drain pipe (incidental to site preparation). The excavated channel sides may be rock lined, however the bottom should be left unlined to collect iron precipitates. Small rock checks may be installed every 30’ in the channel if they are kept less than 1’ high.
The project site has been disturbed by mining and residential development. There are no trees greater than 5” breast diameter height that will be cut or removed. The undergrowth and shrub materials will be disposed of in the waste area. No portals are open now nor does the project intend to open any. Should entries be opened during the excavation they will likely be left opened with a drainage pipe of a size determined in the field with an appropriate access control devise (screen or bars depending on pipe size). All water leaving the site will pass through silt traps and limestone sand. For continued project description see Special Conditions.
