RFB-283-16 Hillside Repair Ashland Group Home

Department of Juvenile Justice

Project Manager Name: Frank Phillips
Phone: (502) 782-0331
Email: frank.phillips@ky.gov

Estimate: $ 38,612.00
Estimated Length of Project: 45 (Substantial Completion) + 30 (Final Completion)

The hillside below the Group Home has been experiencing landslide movements for several years. Approximately two (2) years following initial remediation efforts to stabilize the hillside, unusually heavy rainfall events have caused additional slumping of the upper slope. In addition, movement of the slope below the driveway has caused damage to the pavements. This project consists of work tasks intended to control surface drainage along with installing a french drain and regrading the unstable area to stop movements on the hillside area below the home. Approximately 200 feet of French drain will be installed to intercept and discharge seepage water from within the upper slope. Approximately 500 cubic yards of slumped soils will be excavated from the upper slope area and the hillside will be graded to close earth fissures and scarps along with removing depressions which impound water. All disturbed areas will be seeded and mulched. Soils excavated from the slope will be transported and placed in a designated waste disposal area located west of the existing parking area located adjacent to the lower driveway switchback. A concrete cistern is currently located in the designated waste area. The cistern will be demolished prior to placement of fill. An 18-inch corrugated HDPE culvert pipe will be installed under the fill area to carry runoff from the hillside and roadside ditch. The existing gravel parking area adjacent to the fill area will be reconstructed with a minimum of six (6) inches of DGA, following fill placement. All disturbed areas will be seeded and mulched. Slope movements below the lower driveway area have caused damage to the pavements. To control and divert surface and subsurface drainage away from the slope below the damaged pavement areas, approximately 135 feet of French drains will be constructed in the roadside ditch. The water will be collected and carried across the road by a new 12-inch perforated HDPE culvert pipe. The Group Home is a Department of Juvenile Justice facility that houses juveniles that are wards of the state. The Group Home will be occupied while the construction is taking place. To maintain security of the facility and protect the youth CONTRACTOR RULES of CONDUCT will apply during this project. Access to the house shall be maintained during construction with any interruption of access coordinated with the Facility Superintendent.
